The microsystems technology sector is one of the technological and business powerhouses in Germany. Engineering and plant construction and the automobile industries in particular rely on innovations and developments in the micro or nanofi elds. More than 750 companies in Chemnitz and its region are suppliers to the automobile industry or engineering and plant construction companies.
Issues like the development of new materials or integrating intelligent systems in existing structures hold out hopes of above average growth rates. With about 40 local Microsystems technology companies in the region, the area is one of the most important clusters in this sector. Industrial growth in Chemnitz exceeded the German average for the fourth year in succession last year. About 7,000 companies have been set up here since 1995.
